I run this website for Keighley Liberal Democrats to make
information available to anyone who wants it. I hope this service
will help you - and make you more likely to vote for us.
As a Liberal Democrat, I believe you have a right to be kept in touch.
However, that's very different from forcing information upon you.
All political parties send you leaflets - and you can throw them away quickly
if you don't want to read them - but unwanted telephone calls are different:
they can take up much more of your time.
The Liberal Democrats (unlike the other two major parties)
respect the rights of an individual to opt-out of receiving cold-calling
telephone calls, and work hard to try and avoid calling TPS registered
numbers unless the person being called has specifically given the Lib Dems
permission to ring.
If you want to avoid such calls (as well as other telemarketing calls)
you can register with TPS (to register on-line - click here*), then complain if
organisations pester you!
Unfortunately, complaining isn't quite so easy as registering.
You can
(complain to TPS on line*) but they have no enforcement
power. TPS does pass on complaints to the Information Commissioner's
Office (ICO), the body that is responsible for enforcement.
You can visit the ICO website*, but you can't actually complain
on-line. What you can do is to down-load a complaint form, print that,
fill it in, and send it to the ICO by post.
Liberal Democrats want to make the most of - and to help you to make the
most of - modern communication technology. At the same time, we
respect people's privacy.
We support measures against unwanted telemarketing, spam (email, phone
and texting) and other electronic invasions, while supporting individual
electronic freedom of speech and the right to privacy.

The Liberal Democrats have set up a new website -
www.stopnuisancecalls.com* - to
encourage voters to register formal complaints when they receive nuisance
calls from Labour and the Tories. Fines of up to £5,000 per call
can be imposed by the Information Commission for abusing the TPS system.
Our Bradford Councillor, David Ward (Idle and Thackley), is also
campaigning - read his "Crackdown
on nuisance calls"* page.

We aim at the highest possible accessibility standards -
WCAG 1.0, AAA and WCAG 2.0, level 3 (with valid HTML).
Unfortunately, that's hard to prove.
The checker linked above, for instance, fails almost every page on the site,
but when I follow up the "faults", so far, they have all turned out
to be warnings about issues that have been taken into account.
Please feel free to check for yourself, then
if you find an exception, please
In accord with our aim of accessibility, it is site policy not
to specify font families or point sizes for our pages. You can choose the
size and typeface you see: set the
'default font' in your own browser. (Roger Beaumont has published
some instructions about how
to set your default font.)
Volunteers required.
We use the automated checking tools above to try to make this Website accessible
but need help from someone who has a real sight disability to give us feedback
about practical use with a screen-reader - especially about problems. If you
can help, we'd be very glad to hear from you.
The REAL alternative
"The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a free, fair
and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental
values of liberty, equality and community and in which no-one
shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity." Preamble to the Liberal Democrat Federal Constitution, first sentence.
