Tuesday, 6 Jan, 2009 - 6:00 pm A cunning plan for insulating every solid wall home in the UK * Most people now realise that the challenge in terms of housing stock and carbon emissions is not new buildings but old ones. 80-90% of our homes will still be standing in 2050. We therefore have to retro-fit them with energy efficiency and energy generation measures if we're to have any chance of hitting the government's new national 80% emissions reduction target. I think local authorities have the ability to provide a solution so long as they concentrate not on eco bling like solar panels but on the "boring" stuff like insulation and double glazing.
Thursday, 18 Dec, 2008 - 6:42 pm Nick Clegg announces Lib Dem plan for a "Green Road out of Recession" * A year ago today I was elected as leader of our great party. It has been a challenging and exciting year. I am very proud that in that time we have made all the running on so many of the important issues facing us.
Tuesday, 9 Dec, 2008 - 9:48 am Transcript and video of Nick Clegg's speech at the Climate Change Rally * "There are a lot of people, particularly people on low incomes, really really worried about putting food on the table, paying their mortgage this month, paying their heating bills this winter, and most depressingly of all: we have commentators, pundits, politicians lining up, saying that you're wasting your time. That in a recession we can't afford the luxury to worry about the planet. That at a time of economic hardship we haven't got the privilege, we're self-indulgent to worry about the environment. They are wrong, you are right."
Saturday, 6 Dec, 2008 - 11:15 pm Nick Clegg impresses at the climate change rally in Parliament Square * Nick Clegg joined thousands of environmental campaigners who marched to Westminster today to demand stronger action to combat climate change. Green Liberal Democrats were delighted with Nick's strong speech at the rally in Parliament Square.
Wednesday, 3 Dec, 2008 - 7:00 pm Cut the beef says Climate Change Committee * The new Climate Change Committee headed up by Adair Turner has just published its first stab at advising the UK government on how to reach it target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. One of the most striking things in the advice is the recommendation that we need to eat less carbon-intensive meat like beef. Hurrah!
Monday, 4 Feb, 2008 - 12:00 am Energy Savings Trust Annual Review 06-07 Launched * The annual review gives an insight into what's been happening at the Energy Saving Trust over the past year. Awareness of the importance of climate change is high. However, with conflicting information from so many sources, people are understandably confused about where to go for information and advice. The Energy Saving Trust is attempting to address this confusion by offering consumers a single, independent and trusted source for all their energy saving advice and information. We are now clearly seen as the leading independent adviser offering energy saving advice to consumers - dealing with millions of people annually. No-one else has an ability to independently verify energy saving attributes of products and this year we've already supported numerous companies with our verification work.
Thursday, 24 Jan, 2008 - 2:00 pm Reactions to EU climate and energy package * The CO2 reduction and renewable energy targets put forward by the Commission on 23 January have evoked, according to EurActiv, a flood of reactions from member states, industry, NGOs and other stakeholders. Below follows an overview from EurActiv:
Saturday, 12 Jan, 2008 - 6:00 am Clean Power from Deserts. Renewables are the Responsible, Serious Alternative to Nuclear * At a meeting in the European Parliament, Brussels, 28 November 2007, EU -MENA released details of the most positive, realistic, technological answer to our energy needs. The findings by DESERTEC demonstrate that the west can draw its current energy requirements from an energy grid stretching from Iceland to the Sahara, harnessing geothermal energy, wave power, wind power, solar voltaic cells, and solar parabolic troughs.
